The buzz surrounding the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team is likely designing a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
